Daniel and I went on a whirlwind press trip and ended up visiting Bloomington, Nashville, and Columbus. I know you’re thinking that I’m confused about my geography…but I’m not! These three towns are located about an hour south of Indianapolis, Indiana. All share a rich blend of arts, culture, andoutdoor activities. Each town boasts a thriving arts scene, with numerous galleries, theaters, and cultural events celebrating local and regional talent. Fromlive musicand theater performances in Bloomington. To the eclecticart galleriesin Nashville and Columbus’s renowned architecture tours, these communities offer vibrant cultural experiences. For now though, we’re focusing on visiting Bloomington, Indiana.

Lennie’s

In 1989, Lennie’s rocked Bloomington with gourmet pizza goodness, perfectly paired with imported beers and those cool new craft brews everyone was buzzing about. One of the owners, after catching the craft beer fever hard, teamed up with legislators to overhaul outdated laws. Fast forward to 1994, after some serious brewery hopping and legislative magic, Bloomington Brewing Company burst onto the scene right next to Lennie’s, bringing sudsy joy to southern Indiana as the region’s first brewpub.

Lennie’s is the only place to get woodfired pizza in Bloomington. They are known for their Lennie’s Sandwich, which is amazing! Succulent roast beef, meticulously shaved to perfection, mingling with crispy bacon, delicate shreds of lettuce, and a generous smear of creamy mayo, all nestled on Lennie’s artisanal house bread. But wait, there’s more! A burst of tangy sweetness awaits with marinated red onions, harmonizing beautifully with slices of juicy tomato and decadent mozzarella. Each bite is a journey through layers of savory bliss, a culinary masterpiece that will leave your taste buds singing with delight.

We found it to be the ultimate hangout with a vibe that’s as warm and inviting as their farm-fresh, sustainable eats. And Hey, they proudly pour Bloomington Brewing Company’s delicious, unfiltered brews straight from the tap. Cheers to that!

Nick’s English Hut

If you haven’t been to Nick’s, check it out when you’re visiting Bloomington, Indiana! We indulged in their mouthwatering Pizza Stromboli, Italian Beef Sandwich, and Pork Tenderloin Sandwich – all of them were out of this world! But the real star of the show was the Sink the Biz fries, tossed in Romano and Nick’s special spices. Paired with their famous garlic mayonnaise for dipping-Absolutely delicious! Highly recommend this spot for anyone in thearea! This iconic eatery has been a beloved local institution since 1927, serving up classic English pub fare with a Hoosier twist.

Nick’s offers everything from mouthwatering burgers and hearty sandwiches to savory fish and chips, with something for every palate. Wash it all down with a cold pint of beer or a signature co*cktail from their extensive drink menu. Whether you’re a longtime fan or a first-time visitor, a meal at Nick’s English Hut is a must for any foodie exploring Bloomington’s vibrant culinary scene.

Living in Bloomington, a college town, means embracing the lively vibe of its student population. But for a change of pace, head to C3. Tucked away in the southeast corner, it’s apeaceful retreatfrom the downtown bustle. One of the standout dining experiences in the city is at C3, known for its chef-driven cuisine and handcrafted co*cktails. Their menu changes seasonally, offering a range of gourmet dishes from elevated tacos to sumptuous steak dinners, perfect for a romantic date night or a special celebration.

FARMbloomington

If you prefer a more eclectic dining atmosphere, FARMbloomington is the place to be. A vibrant culinary hotspot in Bloomington, offering farm-to-table cuisine in a cozy atmosphere. This restaurant is famous for its creative, seasonally-inspired dishes and playful global flavors. A must-try is their FARMFamous Garlic Fries, revered as some of the best in town.

La Una Cantina

La Una Cantina is a vibrant Mexican restaurant located in Bloomington, Indiana. You’ll experience a fusion of contemporary Mexican flavors and a curated tequila bar, drawing inspiration from the vibrant tastes of Oaxaca. Known for its lively atmosphere and authentic cuisine, it’s a favorite spot among locals and visitors alike. Janko’s Little Zagreb

We were lucky enough to visit Janko’s Little Zagreb, one of thecornerstones of Bloomingtonrestaurants. This is a beloved steakhouse that has been delighting diners since 1977. Famous for its hearty portions and top-quality steaks, Janko’s has earned a reputation as a must-visit dining spot for both locals and visitors. Known also for their spicy meatballs and garlic rolls. I had both of these and they were amazing! Some of the best garlic rolls I’ve had.

The restaurant’s rustic charm and lively atmosphere make it agreat placeto enjoy a delicious meal with family and friends. Known for its succulent steaks, particularly the filet mignon and New York strip, Janko’s also offers a variety of other delectable dishes including fresh seafood and savory side items. Whether you’re celebrating a special occasion or simply enjoying a night out, Janko’s beckons you to a culinary experience that promises to etch itself into your memory, beckoning you back time and time again.

While at Janko’s Little Zagrab, I saw that Scholar’s Inn Bakehouse provides the rolls listed on the menu . The Scholars Inn Gourmet Cafe & Wine Bar purchased the Bakehouse around the early 2000’s to offer their guests gourmet breads and baked goods. Word quickly spread about the exceptional quality of Bakehouse products. Soon, Bakehouse breads, bagels, pastries, and their famous Bakehouse Granola were being served in restaurants throughout the Bloomington area. Within a few years, these products had expanded their reach across the Midwest, as the Scholars Inn Bakehouse partnered with wholesalers and major retailers in the region.

Hinkle’s Hamburgers

Hinkle’s Hamburgers, Bloomington’s iconic burger spot since 1930, keeps it simple and satisfying. With just a handful of classic burger options– it’s a no-fuss, no-frills delight. For a budget-friendly treat, indulge in the Hinkle Burger or the Double Hinkle with Cheese. And don’t forget to top off your meal with a creamy hand-dipped milkshake for the ultimate diner experience!

In 2011, Bloomington purchased 18 acres of old railroad bed and opened the second phase of theB-Line Trail, a 3.1-mile paved pathway fromAdams StreettoCountry Club Drive. The City then focused on transforming the former McDoel switchyard intoSwitchyard Park.

Lake Monroe

Enjoy the fresh air andnatural beautysurrounding Indiana’s largest lake. Daniel and I spent the morningkayaking. We learnedLake Monroewas constructed in 1964 and filled with water by 1965,Lake Monroewas developed by the Louisville District of the Army Corps of Engineers primarily for flood control for the White River. Today, beyond its roles in flood control and as a drinking water supply,Lake Monroeserves as a popular recreational destination. Each year, it attracts visitors from across Indiana for activities such as fishing, camping, hiking, and more, making it a vibrant hub for outdoor enthusiasts.

Griffy Lake

NearbyGriffy Lakeis apeaceful retreatfor kayaking, canoeing, and wildlife viewing. It’s hard to believe this hidden gem is just minutes from downtown.Griffy LakeNature Preserve, located on the north side of Bloomington, spans a total of 1,180acres of land, including the 109-acreGriffy Lake. Both the lake and the preserve are owned and managed by theCity of BloomingtonUtilities Services Board.

You can find a vibrant array of fresh produce, artisanal baked goods, and hand-crafted items. The bustling market is not just about shopping. It’s a social event where friends and neighbors gather. Musicians play lively tunes, and chefs demonstrate culinary skills.

In addition to the Saturday market, the Tuesday Market at Switchyard Park offers a midweek opportunity. Both markets emphasize sustainability and support local farmers and artisans.

Spring MillState Park

The memorial honors astronaut Virgil “Gus” Grissom. Grissom, one of the original NASA Project Mercury astronauts selected in 1959. He became the second American to fly in space, following Alan Shepard. He was also the first NASA astronaut to fly into space twice. His first flight, aboard Liberty Bell 7, ended in controversy when the spacecraft sank after splashdown. Grissom’s second flight was as command pilot of Gemini 3, the first manned Gemini flight, with John Young. Grissom, along with astronauts Ed White and Roger Chaffee, tragically died in a fire. It took place during a pre-launch test for the Apollo 1 mission.
