After three decades, Jimmie Howell has returned to his hometown to become Lapel High School's athletic director and boys' basketball coach.
He had left his job in Brownsburg to return to the building where he and his wife, Angie attended school from kindergarten through senior year. "They've rearranged things," Howell said, surrounded by boxes and paperwork in his new office down a hallway to the left of the school's main entrance. "There was another walL I think the principal's office was (next door), and this was the area for the sick room. I wasn't in there too often." Howell's parents and in-laws live in the Lapel area, and he hasn't strayed too far from home, spending most of his coaching career within a 15-minute drive of his hometown. He was an assistant at Frankton for four seasons, spent 14 at Mount Vernon and remained in Fortville during his three years as coach at Muncie South.
Howell moved all the way to Hendricks County in 1998, where he was 91-43 in six seasons as head coach at Brownsburg. "The way things have materialized here it makes you think it's the way it should be," said Howell, who expects to end his career in LapeL "I wouldn't have been able to make the move financially if it was just teaching and coaching, but the athletic director position opened a couple weeks later. (And) if this would have happened last year, I'm not sure I would have made the move because there were a lot of kids in the senior class (at Brownsburg) that I was close to." Woody Fields had been serving as athletic director for Lapel and Frankton but was named principal of the elementary school opening the position that made it possible financially for Howell to take the job. He regrets that the move into administration ends his teaching career. Shelton was suspended in January after he was charged with disseminating matter harmful to a minor and resigned in June. "I talked to (Shelton) a couple weeks ago," said Howell, who is retaining interim coach Tim Hil-debrand to head the junior varsity program. "He's been through something no one wants to go through. I'm hoping and praying things work but with his court case." Howell doesn't officially start his new position until Aug. 2, but he has been teaching summer school at Brownsburg from 730 sum.

He spends a few hours preparing for the fall sports season, then holds an open gym at 7 p.m. for the basketball team before returning home by 10 p.m. "They've been long days," said Howell, who is closing on his home in Brownsburg and a new house in Lapel today and moving Saturday, "but they've been fun." He's already having nightmares about buses passing each other, heading in the opposite direction from where they're supposed to be, and officials not showing up for games. Howell found out Wednesday that an assistant football coach was called to active duty in Afghanistan and could be gone for 12 to 18 months. "That's nothing I've run into as a basketball coach," he admitted. Howell's plans as athletic director include generating more corporate sponsorships for the school reaching out to businesses in the community and alumni living outside the area. There's a sixth-grade basketball team in place, but Howell wants to establish a program for third-, fourth-and fifth-graders in Frankton-La-pel Community Schools that eventually would include all sports.
