Critics Consensus

Though not as engrossing as its first series, Doctor Foster manages to retain its grip thanks to the magnificent Suranne Jones.

Doctor Foster: Season 2 | Rotten Tomatoes (1) James Jackson Times (UK) Mike Bartlett has drawn us back into the milieu of sex and mind games, red bras and lethal blades, his great trick being to make you forget that a second series was barely necessary. Dec 29, 2017 Full Review Doctor Foster: Season 2 | Rotten Tomatoes (2) Hugo Rifkind Times (UK) The central character, the scary doc, is paranoid, naggy, controlling, miserable, erratic, unpredictably furious and no fun at all. But it's not her fault! It's everybody else's fault, for being even worse. Dec 29, 2017 Full Review Doctor Foster: Season 2 | Rotten Tomatoes (3) Sam Wollaston Guardian Tense and preposterous -- Mike Bartlett's outrageous drama swerved to a fabulous finale. Oct 4, 2017 Full Review Doctor Foster: Season 2 | Rotten Tomatoes (4) Keith Watson Metro Newspaper (UK) It's a brilliant set-up, a dysfunctional relationship dissected with surgical skill by writer Mike Bartlett... It's toxic yet at times brutally funny, with dialogue that leaves you breathless. Rated: 5/5 May 20, 2019 Full Review Doctor Foster: Season 2 | Rotten Tomatoes (5) Giles Sheldrick Daily Express (UK) The prognosis for the Fosters is almost certainly terminal but the life support this exhilarating series has been on for the past five weeks should not be turned off. Jane V What a dreadful second season, seriously, don't bother. Ridiculous plot, utterly over played, totally dislikeable characters....really pleased when it ended..... Rated 1/5 Stars • Rated 1 out of 5 stars 08/05/24 Full Review Tom S The catch-22 is that emotionally crippled monsters are too insecure to pair up with someone that has a minimum of emotional health, so they default to another emotionally crippled monster that is their complement, creating a co-dependent relationship. A co-dependent dynamic sows the seeds of its own destruction as each brings out the worst in the other and the marriage steadily deteriorates over time. The mother and father in this story simply can't make the right decisions for their son because they are too pathetically needy and self-involved. It tears their relationship apart and their son is torn apart along with it. Not once does any characters say "We'll deal with this" or "We'll get you help". They all act like it's out of their hands, taking no responsibility, so inevitable the son leaves, his parents are demonstratively toxic individuals. Rated 3.5/5 Stars • Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 09/21/23 Full Review Stephen M Just as good as season one Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/17/23 Full Review Audience Member The second season caught my attention enough that it made me want to finish it. it got a bit dramatic at time and felt unrealistic- the only thing that was real was when it honed in on how crazy peoples lives can feel and how there are intense feelings out there and it forces you to do crazy things. Jodie comer is the best! this was an interesting two seasons Rated 3/5 Stars • Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member At first I had a serious problem with this series and the final message it sends. Then I realized this is divorcee revenge porn for people who probably really WANTED to do all this, but had the sense and good parenting skills to restrain themselves for the sake of their children. So if you sucked it up and did the right thing, then by all means enjoy this toxic tale of fully giving the cheating bastard what he deserved - and then be proud of yourself that you didn't follow suit. Rated 3.5/5 Stars • Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member I should start this by saying I watched it right after Season 1 and was therefore very disappointed. It lacked the thrills, tautness, and moral clarity of season 1. Several scenes were completely pointless or downright unbelievable. The ending was a mess. I also think it ultimately ended up betraying some of the insights of season 1, the main ones being that some people are not worthy of redemption, and revenge is a dish best served cold.
